Baleia Blu Ceramics

Handmade by Adette Contreras in Brooklyn, NY. Inspired by a big blue whale and our little blue planet.

My Happy Place

My Happy Place

With all the madness that's happening (not going to get into that... nope... not doing it...), I'm finding solace more and more in the ceramics studio. So quiet. So easy to zone out and not think about how the world is falling apart in so many ways.

Pieces are getting larger and larger. Threw the biggest bowl I've thrown to date, and a funny little vase that started out as a super tall cylinder until I started fucking with it. Gave it a belly, so it's a nice, pleasantly round shape. But all the toying around forced me to make it shorter. Haha. Still cute though.

Also, I played with some new tools acquired through the magic of Amazon. Carving the Baleine Bleue waves under the casserole dishes and another round little vase. Carving felt so good, so satisfying. Felt better than painting, so maybe I'm meant to be etching/carving into the pieces instead of painting them with underglaze.

Had my first broken piece today. Went to glaze the trio of mugs, and one of them broke. Really bummed about it, but also, it's part of the process, right? C'est la, c'est la. Pressure's on to glaze, and my, do I hate glazing. Ha. Maybe I'll glaze and etch out a pattern from the glaze... that might be fun to play with...
